When Shanghai Disney land opened the Tron Roller Coaster amazed guests. Officially called the Tron Lightcycle Power Run this coaster allowed people to strap into a lightcycle and enter the world of Tron.
Needless to say guests at American parks were a little jealous until it was confirmed that Tron was coming to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. That announcement left some room for speculation. Where would it go? Would anything be closed to make way for it?
Let’s take a look at what this Tron roller coaster will be, where it will be located and any closures that might be necessary.
Where is the New Tron roller coaster going
The new coaster will be in Tomorrowland (as if any other place will make sense) behind Space Mountain in a previously behind the scenes area. That is good news because Tron will not replace an existing attraction but at least one will be modified.
The Walt Disney World Railroad will be shut down in December of 2018. During this time a train will be parked at the Main Street Station and guests can take photos. Disney has not said when the railroad will reopen.
The Tomorrowland Speedway will be closed sometime in 2019 while Disney modifies the track. It will reopen in summer of 2019. Disney has not said how extensive the modifications are but the closure sounds like it will be about six months. So it is probably nothing to big.
What is the Tron roller coaster
The Tron roller coaster (Disney has not released an official name yet) is a motorbike roller coaster. Guests strap on to a motorcycle car and a backrest keeps you firmly in place. The motorbikes are designed to replicate the lightcycles from the movie franchise Tron.
Part of the ride will be indoors and part of the ride will be outdoors. The best way to explain it is probably to let you see for yourself.
When is the Tron roller coaster coming to the Magic Kingdom
Disney has been very vague about the opening date for Tron. The only thing they have said is that it will be in time for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary in 20121. Hopefully it will open sooner considering work has already started but we will have to wait and see.
