Top Ten Disney Overrated Disney Experiences

Some of you are probably thinking something has gone wrong with Grumpy. Has he finally gone off the deep end? After all who could think something is wrong with anything at Walt Disney World. Everything there is perfect right? Well not so much. Even Disney fails from time to time. This Top Ten Disney Overrated Disney Experiences.

I am not saying all of them are terrible. Some of them are and some are not. Some of them just fail to live up to their potential. Others are great but not as great as people make them out to be. They are, well as the title suggests, overrated.

Take a look at the list and as always feel free to tell me where I got it wrong in the comments section.

 # 10 Kali River Rapids

Kali River Rapids is a decent ride. Guests board your standard river rapids raft and head out.

Kali River Rapids at Walt Disney’s Animal Kingdom

After the initial hill Disney does what Disney does best. They seek to immerse you in a story. This particular story has to do with man destroying nature by cutting down the forest and burning a lot of trees.

The ride is about five minutes long but it seems a lot shorter. Maybe it is the standing in a long hot Florida sun forever that makes the ride seem so short.

The ride itself is not terrible but compared to the wait it just doesn’t seem worth it to me.

# 9 Sci-Fi Dine In Theater

Located in Disney’s Hollywood Studios Disney’s Sci-Fi Dine In Theater is a table service meal with a twist. Dinners sit at tables designed to resemble classic convertibles. All the tables face a movie screen that plays clips from vintage sci-fi movies. All of that is pretty cool.

Top Ten Disney Overrated Disney Experiences Sci-fi Dine In Theater
The premise is good but the food is not at Walt Disney World’s Sci-Fi Dine In Theater at Hollywood Studios

What might not be is the food. My wife ordered steak and I ordered ribs. Neither were worth eating. which is why the Sci-Fi Dine In Theater is on the list.

To be fair many of my family members enjoy this one. They all ordered sandwiches though. Maybe those would be great but it might be a while before I am willing to try Sci-Fi out again.

# 8 Flame Tree BBQ

This one saddens me. I used to love the Animal Kingdom’s Flame Tree BBQ. I would talk about it when I was not at Disney World. I would look forward to it. The food was good. The location was great. There is even waterside seating that lets you look over at Expedition Everest.

Top Ten Disney Overrated Disney Experiences Flame Tree BBQ
I love good bbq ribs but Flame Tree BBQ at Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom Park is not the place to get them.

But last time I went the chicken was mediocre and the ribs were terrible.  I know that does not fit in with what most people say about Flame Tree BBQ. The reviews for this one are almost always good. Maybe I was just there on a bad day. Till I get some better food I will stick with calling it overrated.

# 7 Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid

This ride is one of the newest attractions at the Magic Kingdom. Located in Fantasyland it was part of the New Fantasyland Expansion.

Top Ten Disney Overrated Disney Experiences Under the Sea-Journey of the Little Mermaid
I am afraid the imagineers missed the boat on Under the Sea-The Journey of the Little Mermaid

The outside of this ride is gorgeous. The ride itself has some good features, the audio-animatronics are top rate. The songs, taken from the movie, are great.

There is one major disappointment though, you are not on a boat. Imagine if the Jungle Cruise were not on a boat. Or if Pirates of the Caribbean were in a car like the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Neither ride would be the same because the stories are built around the water.

But for this ride guests are in cars, not unlike the doom buggies at the Haunted Mansion.¬†Disney does realize that mermaids live in water right? I know the whole movie does not take place under the sea but the ride name kind of implies water too doesn’t it? I just cannot get over the fact its not on a boat. Somehow riding in a boat makes it more Disney to me. Maybe I am wrong.

# 6 Hollywood Studios

Wow you say. Really Grumpy an entire park makes your list! Why yes it does make my list and I will tell you why.

I am not a Hollywood Studios hater. You should know that from the beginning. Hollywood Studios has two of my favorite rides,¬†Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith and The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. It has also has one of my favorite shows, Fantasmic. ¬†Then there is The Fifties Prime Time Cafe which I also love.

Even the park icon, sorcerer Mickey’s hat, is disappointing

But that is about it. Oh I enjoy Toy Story Midway Mania but good luck getting on it if you don’t have a Fastpass. The rest of the park just does not appeal to me too much. How many times can you see the same stunt shows and still be wowed by how they did that when you already knew?¬†The layout of the park helps land Hollywood Studios on this list too. It is just not laid out well.

Again I am not saying I hate Hollywood Studios but as a full day destination it is overrated. It is a great park for park hopping though.

# 5 Walt Disney World Railroad

Probably everyone knows Walt Disney himself loved railroads. He even had one in his backyard. It should come as no surprise that when Disneyland was built it also included a railroad and so did the Magic Kingdom at Disney World. The Walt Disney World Railroad uses authentic steam engines and makes a complete circuit around the Magic Kingdom.

Top Ten Disney Overrated Disney Experiences Walt Disney World Railroad
The Walt Disney World Railroad circles the Magic Kingdom but unfortunately most of what you see is trees.

There are some good views of some of the other attractions. There are a few scenes that you can only see from the railroad. Mostly what you see, unfortunately, are just your typical Florida trees on either side of you.  In the end it does not feel so much like a Disney attraction as just a train ride. In fact you might forget you are even in the Magic Kingdom if there were not a constant voice over reminding you about the attractions that can be found at the next stop.

# 4 Toy Story Midway Mania

This one is probably a surprise to many of you. I am not saying Toy Story Midway Mania is not a fun ride. It is. I like it.

What I am saying is that it is not as good as its reputation. I mean Fastpasses are gone almost immediately after park opening sometimes. The standby line is forever long. The ride is not worth that.

Top Ten Disney Overrated Disney Experiences Toy Story Midway Mania
Toy Story Midway Mania is a good ride but the ride does not justify the long wait times.

Then why are the lines so long and the Fastpasses gone? Long story short there is very little else to do at Hollywood Studios.

# 3 Anna and Elsa Meet and Greet

I know Frozen has made Disney over one billion dollars (no exaggeration) and is the most successful animated film in history. I know little girls love Anna and Elsa. So you are thinking how can the Anna and Elsa meet and greet at the Princess Fairytale Hall possibly make the list of Top Ten Overrated Disney Experiences?

Top Ten Overrated Disney Experiences Anna and Elsa Meet and Greet
The two most popular princesses today are Anna and Elsa from Frozen. But are they worth a six hour wait?

Well the two Frozen princesses make the list because the line to greet them seems just as Frozen as the mythical kingdom they live in. Wait times for this one have stretched to six hours! If the Magic Kingdom opens at nine am and stays open till nine pm you could spend half of your day in this one line. That, my friends, is the definition of overrated.

Fortunately Disney is testing some ways to reduce the wait times. Hopefully they work but till then it stays on the list.

# 2 Tomorrowland Transit Authority People Mover

You probably saw this one coming from a mile away. The Tomorrowland Transit Authority has to be one of, if not the, worst rides in all of Walt Disney World.

Top Ten Disney Overrated Disney Experiences Tomorrowland Transit Authority

Tomorrowland Transit Authority People Mover. Is it the worst ride at Walt Disney World?

Billed as a tour of some of Tomorrowland’s attractions it feels more like a ride through the hallways of any nondescript building. Again in fairness you do get to see the inside of Space Mountain and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. You also get a good view of Tomorrowland. None of this, however, makes the ride worth your time unless you have a lot more time than I do.

# 1¬†Cinderella’s Royal Table

Say it isn’t so! Cinderella’s Royal Table is on¬†Top Ten Disney Overrated Disney Experiences list! I am afraid it is.

Top Ten Disney Overrated Disney Experiences Cinderella's Royal Table
Eating in Cinderella Castle is great. The price is certainly lives up to the royal name but the food does not.

I know that this is the one meal every little Disney princess looks forward to. I know that it is one of the hardest reservations to get. I know you get to eat in Cinderella’s Castle and there are photo ops. In fact it is all the great expectations for this one that land it at the number one place. When people think Disney World they think Cinderella’s Castle. Cinderella’s Royal Table just does not live up to expectations though.

But honestly, for the price, Cinderella’s Royal table is underwhelming. ¬†If you want to eat in the Castle it’s great. If you want good food you can get much better for a lot less at other Disney dining establishments.

There you have it my Top Ten Disney Overrated Disney Experiences. Again I am not saying everything on the list is terrible. I am just saying they are overrated. What are your thoughts? 1. If you approach People Move as “a ride” then I can see the argument. But, given the line is almost always zero, and if you approach it as “10 minute feet rest / nap time along (mostly) air conditioned route” then it is, I think, one of the most UNDER rated attractions! It’s a good send when your feet hurt and you’re tired or over heating.

  2. For the most point, I agree with everything on your list. Wait time is what gets me the most. Won’t even consider seeing the Frozen sisters for that reason. Hollywood Studios? Haven’t been there is three years and plan for it to be at least another 3 until whatever changes they are planning are hopefully finished. I have another one that I know will put me in a VERY SMALL group…Soaring! Sorry, I find it lame, even with fast pass the wait is long. The concept is great but when you are in the middle or back and are seeing a row of feet against the sky it kills the illusion. Maybe some skirting across the back of those dangling feet would help. Like I said, I know mot people will not agree with me.

  3. I agree with some of your list, mainly my biggest was the Anna and Elsa, I know they are the biggest thing but 3-4 hrs plus waiting??? Really? we were there last month and on the way in I thought why not try for a fast pass…. got it and when we arrived 10 mins early they let us right in. There was no one there. The girls were being review by a manager so Anna was just great we took lots of photos with her, Elsa barely had a photo taken with me like she could care less. As I said there was no one there so it wasn’t like they moved us along for the crowds. I would never wait the long hours to see them maybe if it were Johnny Depp

  4. I grew up going to Disneyland (first and foremost! In my opinion is it the BEST of the two parks because it WAS the original park) I have been to Disney World too. I’ve ridden both of the trains there. We always went on the train ride – at least one time each visit. I never viewed it as a “ride” really because we would always ride, usually towards the late afternoons when your feet really needed a break and you wanted to head back to the park entrance – perhaps for a meal break (or just to go home!) I remember listening to Dad talk about Walt and how much he loved trains and listening to the nostalgia in his voice about growing up BEFORE there was a Disneyland and getting to go when it first opened and how awesome it was growing up. For that reason alone, I don’t think it’s over-rated, and not thinking of it as a “ride” but just an enjoyable way to get around the park and rest your aching feet!

Having only been to Disney World once – I have to agree with a number of things on your list! All I heard about with the Sci-Fi theater was how awesome it was – but really, the food was not that great (in fact most food inside of the parks was less than spectacular) and when I’m standing in line, hassling to make reservations and get around to these places and then the food is just “so-so” totally not worth it! We decided the next time we go – we’ll remember that the food is why we go, not the decorations – when we are eating. As well, I was really disappointed with Hollywood Studios as well – mostly because of the lay out! It was a difficult park to manage and I remember us walking around and around wasting a lot of that day because of it. The shows were spectacular and enjoyable and I don’t mind watching those again and again – but I’ve heard they closed Indiana Jones – which is a shame – was a fun show.

    1. You bring up a good point with Walt’s fascination with Railroads. Grumpy had forgotten that. Maybe the Railroad could get a bump just because Walt loved them.

  5. I really enjoy all ten things on your list, but I understand that everyone doesn’t like the same things. In my opinion, the most overrated restaurant at WDW is Chef Mickey’s. We didn’t enjoy the food at all and the characters were the worst we have ever had. The most overrated ride is Space Mountain. We found it to be very jerky and just not worth the wait. Luckily, there are LOTS of restaurants and rides that we LOVE!! Can’t wait to visit them all in a few days:)

    1. Grumpy enjoys a lot of them too. Just some seem overhyped and the wait is too long. Agree with you on Space Mountain. And there certainly is plenty to keep Grumpy going back. Have a great trip ūüôā
