Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge

Bog Iger, chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney Company, first announced that Star Wars was coming both Disneyland and Walt Disney World at the D23 Expo in August of 2015. He promised a unique and immersive experience but did not really give much in the way of detail. In fact he did not even give this new Star Wars land a name. In August of 2017 Bob Chapek, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, told us this new land will be called Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge but what else do we know about this new Star Wars land?

Where Will Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge Be?

There is a healthy rivalry between Walt Disney World in Florida and Disneyland in California. When rumors started circulating that Disney was going to add a Star Wars land to one of the theme parks both coasts started promoting their park as the best choice. Unfortunately if one coast got it and not the other someone was going to be very disappointed. That made Bob Iger a hero when he announced that both parks were going to get it.

At Disneyland Galaxy’s Edge is being built north of Frontierland where Big Thunder Ranch used to be located. Big Thunder Ranch permanently closed permanently on January 11, 2016. Imagineers also rerouted Disneyland Railroad and Rivers of America to accommodate the new land.

At Walt Disney World Disney is building the new Star Wars land at Hollywood Studios.  The new land replaces most of the Streets of America.

What Will Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge Feature?

Disney is building two new rides for Galaxy’s Edge (at both parks.) Details about both rides are a little sketchy but here is what we do know.

One ride features the famous Millennium Falcon. Guests on this attraction become the will pilot the famous piece of junk on a top secret mission. How will this work? I guess we have to wait and see. Hopefully it involves a little more than Mission Space at Epcot.

The other ride puts guests in the middle of a battle between the Resistance and the First Order.  Indications are that this will be more traditional dark ride. There are rumors that at some point during the ride guests will exit the ride vehicle and transfer to a new vehicle.

Guests will also be able to eat and shop at Galaxy’s Edge.  Disney advertises this new land as a completely immersive experience so we can guess that the new restaurants and shops will be heavily themed.

There will be two new dining locations (at least.) One will probably be counter service and the other table service. It looks like there will be a cantina. The dj at this cantina will be Rex, the former pilot of Star Tours who got us all into lots of trouble. The other restaurant will be a “dinner club”. And if you have ever wondered what blue milk tastes like,  you will get your chance to find out!

When Will Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge Open?

There is no exact date for when Galaxy’s Edge will open at either park but we do know it will be sometime in 2019 and we know it will open first at Disneyland and then later at Hollywood Studios.
