Illuminations (officially Illuminations: Reflections of Earth) is coming to an end. It had been speculated for a while that this was coming but today Disney made it official (for the official Disney release click here.)
Disney did not provide a lot of details (but they rarely do.) We only know that Illuminations will run until the end of summer 2019 and that it will be immediately replaced by a new show. So far we have not been told what this new show will be like or even give a name.
The end of Illuminations is all part of Disney’s move to reinvent Epcot.
What is Illuminations
It is the night time show at Epcot at Walt Disney World. The show is best viewed from the World Showcase because most if it take place on the World Showplace Lagoon. Although the show does have fireworks there is a lot that takes place on the water closer to ground level. Guests in Future World at Epcot can catch a glimpse of some of the fireworks but will miss most of the show.
The show involves fireworks and barges floating on the lagoon. It tells the story of the world from chaos to order and provides a meaning to it all (basically that the world would be a better place if all people from every nation came together to work for the benefit of the world.) There is also a sound track.
The centerpiece of the show is a barge containing a globe shape. This barge displays images from around the world and at the end of the show a torch symbolizing the unity of the world.

The History of Illuminations
The show debuted as IllumiNations 2000: Reflections of Earth on October 1st, 1999 as part of the Walt Disney World Millennium Celebration. It was an instant success so Disney opted to keep it around and dropped the 2000 from the name.
Since then millions of people have gathered around the World Showcase Lagoon to see the show.
How good is Illuminations
Unlike Fantasmic or Happily Ever After (or its predecessor Wishes) Illuminations it not on my must do list. Sometimes I will watch it sometimes I will not.
That being said if you have never seen it I would recommend you catch it if you can. What I like and what you like could be very different.
