Like all of the other parks at parks at Walt Disney World Epcot is getting some big changes. One of those changes meant the end of Ellen’s Universe of Energy to make way for a brand new attraction, a Guardians of the Galaxy roller coaster.
This is all part of an effort to update and upgrade Walt Disney World’s second theme park. Other projects include a Ratatouille inspired ride at the France pavilion in World showcase and maybe more.
While we do not know a whole lot about this new attraction? Let’s take a look at what we do know.
When was the Guardians of the Galaxy Roller Coaster announced?
This new attraction was first announced at the D23 Expo in July of 2017. In typical Disney fashion they did not give a lot of detail. The original announcement did not tell us exactly what to expect. They did say it would replace Ellen’s Energy Adventure. For the original announcement click here.
What will the new Guardians of the Galaxy Roller Coaster be like?
Since the original announcement Disney has teased us with some more information. This quote is from D23 Expo Japan in February of 2018.
With the “Guardians of the Galaxy”-inspired coaster, we’re going big. This one-of-a-kind family attraction will be one of the world’s longest enclosed roller coasters when it’s added to Future World at Epcot. It’ll feature a unique story currently being created by Walt Disney Imagineering and include a new innovative ride system that’s guaranteed to “wow” guests.
This attraction is part of our ongoing work to transform Epcot into a place that’s more family, more relevant and more timeless. “As we build upon its core mission of optimism and hope to inspire the world, the real will become fantastic and the fantastic will become real—in whole new ways at Epcot,” Bob Chapek, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, said.
The attraction will open in time for the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World Resort in 2021. Keep checking the Disney Parks Blog for future updates.
Sounds exciting to me but what does it mean? Will it include 3D? Maybe? Will it mix a traditional coaster with elements of a dark ride? Guess we will have to wait and see. I do think it will have a rocking 80s sound track (much like Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith at Hollywood Studios) since music was such a big part of the movie.
When will the Guardians of the Galaxy Roller Coaster open?
The original announcement said it would open in time for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary. That would mean before October 1st, 2021. Disney later said just in time for the anniversary so it will probably be late summer or early fall of 2021.
