Unless you live on a planet even more remote than Tatooine you have probably heard about Galaxy’s Edge. Galaxy’s Edge is the name of a new Star Wars land being built at Disneyland in California and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida.
The new land was announced in 2015 but Disney did not give us a lot of details. Since then we have learned a lot more about it so let’s take a look at some of what we know.
- Where is this new land
- Back Story for Galaxy’s Edge
- Galaxy Edge Attractions
- Food at Galaxy’s Edge
- Shopping at Galaxy’s Edge
- Character Meet and Greets
- Star Wars themed hotel

At Disneyland, Galaxy’s Edge is being built north of Frontierland and replaces Big Thunder Ranch.
At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney is replacing most of the Streets of America including Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show
Like most Disney attractions (and even some lands) Galaxy’s Edge has a back story. This new Star Wars land is not on a setting from any of the movies. It represents Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu.
Batuu is a planet at the edge of the galaxy known as the Outer Rim. Because it is part of the Outer Rim it is a lot wilder than most of the galaxy. It is a place were smugglers, adventurers and anyone else looking to avoid the First Order can feel at home.
When guests enter Black Spire Outpost they can expect to feel like they have stepped into a Star Wars story much as people at Universal really feel like they are at Diagon Alley.
There will be two new attractions in the new land. One is a dark ride themed around a battle between the First Order and the Resistance. The second ride will let guests board the Millennium Falcon. Neither ride has an official name yet.
Guests on the First Order ride will board and 8 seat Resistance transport. Guests will “fly” to a Star Destroyer and witness first hand a battle a battle between the First Order and the Resistance.
On the Millennium Falcon ride guests will either pilot the famous ship, fire the lasers or be in charge of engineering on a mission. This is a mission for Hondo, a space pirate. How well guests perform the mission will affect the rest of their experience in Star Wars land. For more information on the Millennium Falcon ride click here.
And of course Star Tours – The Adventure Continues is not going anywhere! This simulator ride takes you on adventures through that galaxy far, far away. Unlike many simulators the ride is rarely the same. Guests fly through a randomized set of scenes from the movies and beyond.
Disney has not made any announcements about the Jedi Training Academy: Trials of the Temple but I am expecting it to stay! This adventure for little ones lets them learn the ways of the force and face the evil of the dark side. For more information and how to register (and yes you must register!) click here.
There will be multiple locations at Black Spire Outpost to fill up. These locations will serve some exotic fare including the blue milk from a New Hope.
First on our list is Oga’s Cantina. It will serve drinks to both children and adults made with the “most exotic ingredients and and ‘otherworldly’ methods all in unique vessels.” Music will be provided by RX-24 (the former pilot at Star Tours.) Click here to read the official Disney press release.
We do not know much about the other two locations, Docking Bay 7 and Bantha Tracks. We know Docking Bay 7 will have food and we know Bantha Tracks will have the blue milk. Beyond that we have to wait for more news to be released.
There will be at least one merchandise location, Toydarian Wares. Guests will be able to buy themed merchandise including some exclusives.
For those who do not know or remember Watto, who owned young Anikan Skywalker and his mother in Phantom Menace, was a Toydarian. I am hoping to see a real, live Toydarian animatronic.
Disney has confirmed there will be meet and greets for Chewbacca, R2-D2, BB-8, Kylo Ren, Hondo, and Nien Nunb (the co-pilot of the Millennium Falcon when Lando attacked the second Death Star in Return of the Jedi.)
While those are the only confirmed meet and greets I would be surprised if there are not some First Order Storm Troopers, Resistance fighters, aliens and even Jedi wandering around the Black Spire Outpost.
Yes you read that right, a Star Wars Hotel. Disney is building a new resort hotel that will be star wars from beginning to end. Cast members will be characters from the Star Wars Galaxy and guests will be too! Unfortunately, this one is a Walt Disney World exclusive. Disney has not announced any plans to build one at Disneyland.
This new, as of yet unnamed, hotel will be located just outside of Hollywood Studios and have a special park entrance between the Millennium Falcon and First Order rides.
It will be shaped like a ship from the Star Wars galaxy, Rooms will be designed to be part of the ship and windows will “look” out into space.
As I said above this hotel will let guests become part of the story like never before. Exactly how this will work I do not know yet but we have hints about learning to use a lightsaber and dueling, piloting an spacecraft and going on secret missions.
All of these experiences will presumably carry over to Galaxy’s Edge. In fact, the reason the hotel is so close to the park is so guests never have to leave the Star Wars world.
One key thing we do not know yet is cost but it will not be cheap. This will be a deluxe resort with a deluxe price but just how deluxe we will have to wait and see.
People are speculating already about an expansion to Black Spire Outpost. Evidently there is a space reserved in case the land is successful (Disney take my word it will be!) This new land is for an additional ride and restaurant.
